SERMON: May 12th, 2019 “The Power of a New Affection”
Every trial in life carries a test that never leaves us the same – every change whether good or bad is a test and an opportunity to grow or for sin to develop. Test and trials don’t cause us to sin. We cannot say that God or satan ‘made’ you sin; only you, yourself is the cause for sin. The occasion isn’t the cause of why you sin; we all have the ‘dignity of responsibility’ that we have freedom to do our own will – we only do what we want to do (Jonathan Edwards “Freedom of the Will”). We are tempted not only by wanting bad things, but wanting things so badly. We don’t always want to do bad things; we often want good things like success, friends and the like, but it becomes sin when we have an over-desire for even the good things. It becomes spiritual adultery when we are enticed by other ‘lovers’ that take us away from having God at the center of our soul. It becomes sin when you have any ‘paramour’ other than God! The only way to break the hold of a beautiful object on the soul is to show it an object even more beautiful. (“The Expulsive Power of A New Afffection” Thomas Chambers) The answer is not less desire, (but a new desire and that new desire can only be Jesus – where we bring Him out of ‘ritual’ – of ‘doing church’ and have a passionate, addiction to Jesus! We need to fall in love with Jesus!
