SERMON: September 1st, 2019 “It is by GRACE that You have been Saved Through Faith”
Ephesians 2:1-10 New International Version (NIV)
Made Alive in Christ
2 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
God’s mission has always been to form a distinct people to live a spirit filled life for the sake of the world. This church exists for the sake of the world. All of us, at one time have been Children of Wrath and dead following the enemy of the world, but because of His great mercy and love we were made alive in Christ. “This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 1:20) that raised us to be alive in Christ. Because we are seated with Jesus in heavenly places, when God sees Jesus, He sees us! We need to live as though we are people of heaven – with the scent of heaven. How freeing is that thought?! We are God’s created handiwork saved by grace and therefore the order of our walk with God starts with the understanding of GRACE, then FAITH and then WORKS. If we take these out of order, then we chain ourselves to believe the lie that it is in works that we are saved and not grace alone. If we look to our faith and miss grace, then we believe it is our own doing. Faith is the willingness to accept what God has done for us based on GRACE and saying thank You for Your great mercy and love, Lord!
