SERMON: July 16th, 2017 “What was Saul thinking?”

Pastor Dave’s message today was centered around Saul’s Conversion.  Saul was the rising star of the day, he was the Hebrew of Hebrews, the Pharisee of Pharisees and also the great persecutor of Christians.  We find out in Acts 8:3 that “Saul was ravaging the church”.  The question being, “What was Saul thinking?”  He was a pupil of the well respected Gamaliel (Acts 5:34) who supported not going after the discpiles, but yet Saul did exactly that.  Saul was “kicking against the goads” (Acts 9:5) or fighting against the truth that he had witnessed at Stephen’s stoning.  When Saul was on the road to Damascus, the Lord spoke to Saul, and he questioned, “Who are you Lord” (v.5) as if it dawned on him that everything that he had heard was true and Jesus was Lord.  This was the point of Saul’s conversion.  In trembling and astonishment he surrendered and humbled himself to Jesus by asking, “Lord what do you want me to do?”  That is the question we also have to ask the Lord.  We need to humble ourselves and commit ourselves to Way, the Truth and the Life.
