SERMON: November 26th, 2017 Dr. Stan Helton “Come and Die”
There are three key words to describe what it means to follow Jesus – DENY – TAKE UP – FOLLOW. Dr. Stan Helton brought us today the message from Mark 8:27-38. When the disciples asked the question, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”, in Mark 4:41, the disciples still didn’t understand who Jesus was. It wasn’t until Mark 8 when Jesus Himself asks the same question to His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Even though Peter was able to answer, he still didn’t see who Jesus was. Today, we still need to ask the same question, “who is Jesus to me?” “Am I willing to suffer for the sake of others to be His disciple?” “Am I following God’s agenda or mine?” There is a cost to following Jesus. The only possible outcome to discipleship is death. Church today has become a place of self-help versus what our call truly is – to give up self. We have to give up our agenda and take up the lifestyle of Jesus. We need to be passionate about what Jesus is passionate about – the lost, pursing God’s will, the poor, the sick, children, people. We need to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him. This is our call to death.
